Environment Protection

KAMAZ Inc is a large production complex assembling heavy-duty trucks and passenger cars, and also parts and components for them. It builds its own diesel engines and manufactures large range of tools, facilities, unique equipment and other goods. The Company is a major supplier of diversified parts and components to machine building companies in other industry areas. KAMAZ unites 10 dedicated plants that are located in Tatarstan, 9 of them in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny. These plants are equipped with the most advanced lines and machinery and use the latest technologies.

KAMAZ is a complex of a number of dedicated production plants, namely: the Foundries, Forging, Frame-and-Stamping, KamAZ-Diesel, Machining, Assembly, Tool Plant, OKA Small Passenger Car Assembly, Engine Repair Plant. Another 6 subsidiaries are located in other regions of Russia, in Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

KAMAZ Inc. is the owner of the largest servicing and distributing network.

KAMAZ was established in 1969, when in line with the USSR Government’s Decree there was launched construction of heavy-duty trucks production complex, the biggest in Europe. It was designed to output 150 000 heavy-duty trucks and 250 000 diesel engines annually. The first truck was assembled in February 16, 1976. By August 13, 1999, there have been assembled 1,600,000 vehicles. Soon after that there was built the 2,200,000s diesel. The highest output in the history of KAMAZ was in 1988, when there were assembled about 127 000 trucks. It was on the turn of economical changes in the country that took place soon.

KamAZ trucks are operating in more than 75 countries of CIS, Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, in any climate and on any roads: in Northern Pole and tropics, in deserts and highlands. KamAZ sport trucks are participants and winners of the most prestigious rallies and marathons, such as “Paris - Dakar”, “Paris - Moscow - Beijing”, “Dakar - Cairo” and others.

Projects and Technologies of KAMAZ Inc. aimed at Environment Protection

When KAMAZ has been designed and constructed there were used the latest environment protection achievements of that period.

For soil protection there was built a station for demercuration of mercury containing wastes. There was specified a waste disposal area outside of plants.

At the Forge Plant there were installed 270 ventilation systems for wet purging; 280 sections for air purification from welding fumes; 430 systems for air cleaning from oil, paint, and galvanic vapors; 60 systems of dust and gas purification. “Beghaus” (Sweden) manufactured plant was mounted for purification of fume gases from arc furnaces.

For protection of water resources there were built water inlets, wastewater treatment plants, flumes, main sewer systems, industrial water treatment facilities, sludge treatment facility, chlorination station, recycled water pipeline. There were imported “Efkr”, “Degremon” and “Blasberg” western manufactured wastewater neutralization stations for the areas where production processes caused extreme wastewater pollution.

Environment protection facilities and technological solutions while KAMAZ construction cost about 300 million rubles (in prices valid back in 1984).

Current Environment Protection Activities

At present, “KAMAZ Inc.” is purposely oriented to environment protection and rational use of natural resources. 149 million rubles were assigned and spent in 2002 to meet this target and to overhaul water treatment facilities and equipment.

Wastewater treatment

Among the main activities on environment protection, there is construction of effluent processing plant. This plant is aimed at fine treatment of drain and roughly treated water from the territory of KAMAZ for it to meet industrial water quality standards and to recycle purified water back into the water main. This will stop drain of wastewater from settling ponds ¹ 1 and ¹2 to Shil’na and Chelninka rivers, thus ceasing Kama river polluting too. This project eliminates the need to consume about 40 billion cub.m. of fresh river water from Belous water inlet for industrial needs of KAMAZ plants and facilities.

Soil treatment

KAMAZ Inc is cooperating with “Beefar” production entity (Moscow) on certification of sludge settled wastewater at mechanical treatment station. Re-vegetation of open-cast mine is currently under way. Wastes of rubber, oil products, paper, wood, waste batteries, mercury lamps, etc are sorted and utilized separately.

Apart from it, slags at Foundries and painting wastes are now recycled too.

Atmosphere Protection

There were installed 798 gas and dust scrubbers to trap hazardous substances at stationary exhausting sources.

The following activities could be mentioned as positive:
• 12 increased capacity dust and particle trap plants have been installed at “KAMAZ - Metallurgia” Inc.
• Emission control of all vehicles is being carried out at each KAMAZ plant.

It is planned:
• To remove out-of-date gas purification units and install new generation equipment of higher capacity; to launch exhaust gases purification system at Engine Test Cells of the Engine plant.
• To increase carbonic acid content and hence efficiency of recycling of flue gases trapped from Central Heat and Hot Water Supply Station.
• Introduction of new materials for “Beghaus” flexible-hose filter.
• Monitoring of atmospheric emissions

KAMAZ Inc. has got available environment protection laboratory, well equipped with necessary instruments for constant monitoring of emission concentration that gets into water reservoirs and atmosphere.
